INS Arihant -first nuclear submarine of ATV Project started in 1974

The 'Arihant' India's first indigenous nuclear submarine was launched on July 26, 2009, and after 4 years the reactor reached Criticality in August 2013. ( What is Criticality?)
  • Type - Nuclear Submarine.
  • It will however take another two years of trials for the 6,000-tonne submarine to finally become operational and ready to be deployed.
  • Once operational, the submarine will provide India the third leg of its nuclear triad — the capacity to fire nuclear weapons from land, sea and air. The army has nuclear capable Agni and Prithvi-II missiles in its arsenal and the air force has aircraft capable of delivering nuclear warheads.
  • With this, India becomes the sixth nation in the world to have the capability to design and construct a nuclear submarine and the only country in the Indian Ocean region to have a nuclear submarine.
  • Its design is based on the Russian Akula-1 class submarines.
  • Reactor type: The Arihant's 83Mw pressurised water reactor has also been built with considerable assistance from the Russians
  • INS Arihant, India's first nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, which went "critical" over the weekend, has enabled India to join a select club of nations like the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France, which possess nuclear-powered submarines.
  • INS Arihant is to be the first of the expected five in the class of submarines designed and constructed as a part of the Indian Navy's secretive Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project -1974
  • It could use missiles of cruise of average reach (1,000 km), ballistic missiles of short reach (300 km), torpedoes and mines, besides participating of operatios special.
Topics To Be Read
  •  The vessel displaces 65000 tonnes and can stay under water upto 100 days.
  • Armed with guided missiles, it can carry a crew of 70 people.
  • Nuclear machinery:One pressurized water reactor (PWR) using 20% enriched uranium fuel (160-190MW); one turbine (47,000hp/70MW); one shaft; one 7-bladed, high-skew propeller.
  • The submarine will have VLS tubes capable of firing multiple weapons.
  • Speed (Knots) 12-15 (surfaced) 30-34 (submerged)
  • Range Unlimited. Diving Depth 300 m (984.2ft).
  • Weapons Torpedoes: Six 21 inch (533mm) torpedo tubes. Mines. A total capacity (mines, torpedoes, and missiles) of 30 weapons.
INS Varsha to arrive soon:
India is now said to be constructing a nuclear submarine base on its eastern coast that will be named INS Varsha, for which Rs 160 crore is sanctioned in the 2011-12 budget.
INS Arihant goes critical after 4 years since its launch in 2009
